Every single year, hundreds of Australians die from work-related incidents. Based on the most recent Government data, Safe Work Australia has recently published a list of the most dangerous job sectors in the country.
Safe Work Australia compiles Work-related Traumatic Injury Fatality data which provides national statistics on all worker and bystander fatalities at work. Information sources used to compile this report include:
- initial reporting of fatalities in the media or on relevant authority websites such as police, road authorities and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau
- notifications to Safe Work Australia from the jurisdictional authorities, and
- the National Coronial Information Service which provides confidential access to coroners’, police and other investigative reports.
The most dangerous industries in Australia:
Agriculture, forestry & fishing (16.5 Fatalities per 100,000 workers)
Transport, postal & warehousing (8.6 Fatalities per 100,000 workers)
Arts & recreation services (3.5 Fatalities per 100,000 workers)
Construction Worker (2.7 Fatalities per 100,000 workers)
Wholesale trade (1.6 Fatalities per 100,000 workers)
Electricity, gas, water & waste services (1.5 Fatalities per 100,000 workers)
Mining (1.4 Fatalities per 100,000 workers)
Rental, hiring & real estate services (1.0 Fatalities per 100,000 workers)
Manufacturing (1.7 Fatalities per 100,000 workers)
Public administration & safety (0.6 Fatalities per 100,000 workers)
A Commercial Fisher is widely regarded as the most dangerous job in Australia.
